Try this easy Point Reyes hike at Abbotts Lagoon Trailhead. Since we have family in Marin, we’ve visited Point Reyes National Seashore a number of times and we’ve barely scratched the surface when it comes to hiking. But we like to ease ourselves in when hiking in new territory.
One visit brought us to the Bear Valley Visitor Center which has some very easy hikes under a mile, most of them loop trails. I’d highly recommend starting there. It’s especially nice to check in there before you hit the trails because they will have up-to-date info on trail conditions and weather that might effect your family’s enjoyment.
If you are interested in taking on the stairs that lead to the lighthouse, I wrote a guide about the Point Reyes Lighthouse Visitor Center for Families here.
Easy Point Reyes Hike at Abbotts Lagoon Trail
It’s almost always cool and cloudy out here at Point Reyes — even when it’s hitting the 100s inland — so make sure you wear layers or bring a sweatshirt.
We were looking for somewhere new to explore and stumbled upon Abbotts Lagoon Trailhead. It’s a mile to the lagoon and about a half mile further to the beach. For such a simple hike, there was a lot of wildlife packed into such a small span of space and time. We saw California quail, mule deer, a pair of falcons, a blue heron, and even a coyote during the day!
Plus, I love any hike that combines bridges, boardwalks, and water. This one had all 3!
The trail is a mix of hard-packed dirt and sand. Keep your eyes out for interesting bugs.
Every surface shows evidence of the seashore.
You can see different views of the lagoon all the way along the hike. We crossed the first bridge, walked across the boardwalk, and then crossed a second bridge onto the beach where we watched the clouds move across the landscape.
The map shows that you can walk another half mile to the beach at this point, but we opted to turn back around — after a nice long sit observing our quiet surroundings.
Can you spot the quail?
Can you spot the heron?
Can you spot the coyote? I swear it’s in this photo!
Ha! Good at camoflage, huh? How about now? It was a teensy bit easier to see because it was moving, but my husband did a great job spotting!
Enjoy, relax, and take it easy on this fun Point Reyes hike along Abbotts Lagoon. You never know what you’ll see!
